Germany Not to Qualify13/27/115/29/16/1

This year’s tournament has a lot of potentially excellent matches, and it’s hard to say who will win. France are the favourites after winning the 2018 World Cup. However, England and Belgium have great squads and teams like Portugal, Spain, and Germany are also hard to count out. We believe that despite their excellent historical record at the Euros, Germany will be one of the teams going out of the tournament early.

Germany are 9/1 to finish bottom of Group F on 10bet. For our money, these are great odds, and we’ll explain our reasons below.

Recommended Units: 4/10

Probability: ~12%

Germany’s Performance at the 2018 World Cup

The main reason why we believe Germany will struggle is that they looked shockingly bad at the 2018 World Cup. Germany were in a relatively easy group with Mexico, Sweden and South Korea. They had won the tournament in 2014. Plus, they still had many of the same players, including Kroos and Neuer. Many pundits had Germany as one of the favourites to win. Despite the high hopes from German fans, they came dead last in the group. They won just one game and lost twice, while conceding four goals and only scoring two.

It was one of Germany’s worst-ever performance at a World Cup. It was also the first time they had gone out in the group stage since 1938. And it was the worst performance by a world champion team. It was described as an embarrassment and historic disgrace by the German media. Since that defeat, Germany have looked better, but doubts still remain over this current squad. Many still wonder if they can live up to the expectations set by previous players.

Joachim Löw

Germany’s head coach, Löw, took most of the criticism for Germany’s poor performance at the World Cup. Although he took the team to World Cup glory in 2014, many fans hoped to see the back of him after a dismal performance in Russia. However, the German football association chose to stick with him. They rewarded him with loyalty after all he had done for the team.

Since then, Löw has continued to cause frustration among many German football fans. His team selections and tactics are often criticised. The three at the back defensive system he has often employed is a particular sticking point. It often seems like he is trying to overengineer the team and fit square pegs into round holes. Löw recently announced he would be stepping down as head coach at the end of the Euros. While many fans will breathe a sigh of relief, some are still hoping he will leave before the tournament starts.

Current Form

Of course, the world cup was three years ago, and a lot has changed since then. It is true that there are some very talented players in the German squad, including Sane, Gnabry, Havertz, Werner, Rüdiger and Kimmich. Despite this, their current form has not been great. Germany suffered a shock 6-0 defeat to Spain in the Nations League in November 2020. On the 31st of March, they were beaten by North Macedonia in the World Cup qualifiers.

If their current form is anything to go by, Germany could be in trouble when it comes to the Euros. While there is undoubtedly a lot of talent in their squad, it seems like they’re struggling to get the most out of their players. Anything can happen once the Euros get underway, but this is a big indication that the team will fail to get results in their group.

The Group of Death

Germany find themselves in Group F, which looks to be the hardest group in the tournament and has been nicknamed the Group of Death. Other teams in the group include the current world champions France, the current champions of Europe Portugal and Hungary. This is undoubtedly a tough group, and while Hungary might offer Germany some salvation, it’s unlikely they will roll over for any team.

Combined with all of the other issues facing this German side, the Group of Death could be yet another nail in their coffin. If they do succeed and manage to qualify, they’ll have to take points off of France and Portugal, who are two of the strongest teams in the tournament. Any team that gets out of this group will certainly have a great chance of winning the tournament.

Germany has the joint-best record of any teams at the Euros, having lifted the trophy three times in their history. Most bookmakers have them as one of the outside favourites, with odds of 15/2 to win. However, based on the factors we’ve described, we think that they’ll fail to make it out of their group. Germany have a tough task on their hands to escape the so-called Group of Death, and while they have the potential to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, we still believe they’ll be going home early.
