Portugal Team Guide for the Euro 2021 tournament | Portugal look to build a team not reliant only on Cristiano Ronaldo
Portugal have been performing well on the international stage lately. Their first trophy came about in 2016 when they won the European Championship. Three years later they also won the first Nations League competition beating Netherlands 1-0. They will look to build upon their recent success and becoming another international powerhouse.
- Portugal are unlucky to be in Group F alongside Germany and France. If they can get through the ‘Group of Death’ they can have a good chance of making it to the final.
- The team is not as reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo as they once were. They have great attacking talent with Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix, and Bernardo Silva.
- Since their 2016 Euro win Portugal have become a more attack-minded team, but still retain the defensive discipline that has been instilled by head coach Fernando Santos.
Portugal Team Guide: Tactics
When Fernando Santos first took over the coaching role he used the traditional 4-4-2 formation for most of his games. During the last few games he has adapted a 4-3-3 formation to make use of all the high quality attackers available to him.
Even though Ronaldo is now 36 years old he shows no signs of letting up. It seems that he is just breaking records for fun. In March 2021 he became the first player to score at least 20 goals over 12 consecutive seasons in the top five European leagues. On the international scene, he is only 8 goals away from breaking Ali Daei’s international goal scoring record.
Fernando Santos was a defender as a player and this shows in his record with the national team. Since he has taken over the head coach position Portugal have only lost only 4 competitive games. He currently has a win rate of 62%, the third-highest of any Portugal coach.
Portugal Team Guide: Player Profile
Bruno Fernandes has been something of a revelation since joining Manchester United. He has helped revitalize the team and bring it closer to achieving silverware than before. For the Portugal National team, he is another player that shows where the future of the team lies once Ronaldo hangs up his boots for good.
While playing for Portugal he is deployed in any midfield position. He has played as an AM, LM, and RM during different games and against different opposition. He is a box-to-box midfielder and is well known for his killer passes even though he tends to lose a lot of possession. Fernandes also has strong shooting instincts and has a decent goal scoring record for a midfielder. His outside the box screamers and free kicks are earning him an long shot scoring reputation.
