Wales Team Guide for the Euro 2021 tournament | Giggs is forging a new youthful team in his image and hoping to reach the same heights as 2016
No one really expected Wales to get so far in the previous European Championship. When they were eliminated in the Semi-Finals against a lacklustre Portugal team, many Home Nations fans were disappointed.
Since then the team has only moved on from strength to strength. Most recently, Wales has gone undefeated in their last five games coming into the Euro 2021 competition.
- The superstars of the Wales team are aging, but still in good form.
- Giggs has put his faith in a new crop of younger players and they are repaying that faith in kind.
- The current team is very attack-minded, but a disciplined backline has only let in one goal in their last 5 games.
Wales Team Guide: Tactics
If ever there was a team which played in the style of the head coach, it is this Wales team. The focus is very much on width and pace in attack in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The double pivot provides good defensive protection and allows the full-backs to support the forward line.
Gareth Bale was languishing at Real Madrid, but now he is back with Tottenham, he is slowly starting to find his form again. He is still far away from being the pacey attacking force we remember, but he had a very positive game against Wolfsberger and is gaining match sharpness.
High standards were ingrained at Manchester United and he demands the same as a manager.
Wales Team Guide: Player Profile
Aaron Ramsay was heartbroken with his Euro 2016 semi-final suspension. That day he could not help his team get to the finals. He must feel that he has unfinished business in this competition.
Although Gareth Bale is the Wales team talisman, it is Ramsey that brings out the best in him. Similar to his time at Arsenal, injuries have severely limited his international involvement. He made only one start in th qualifying rounds by scoring both goals in the decisive 2-0 win over Hungary.
Now 30 years old, this will be one of this final chances to achieve something at international level. If he can avoid the niggling injuries that have plagued his career he can again influence and impress as he did five years ago.
